For the most part the park and the climbing here are pretty safe.  As the park has become more popular we are seeing the number of rock climbing accidents rise though. Mostly it’s been leg and foot injuries with the more serious accidents being caused by rockfall.  As a result we formed the Potrero Chico Volunteer Rescue Team.

There seems to be a gap as to how much help the local first responders can provide to injured climbers. So we’ve been assisting the local Protection Civil in an attempt to close this gap and have observed a need for our own equipment. We held a fundraiser and were able to raise enough funds to purchase a Stokes basket, backboards, radios and medical supplies. Continue reading “Potrero Chico Volunteer Rescue Team”

Super Nova In The Snow

El Potrero Chico weather can be very strange sometimes. I’ve woken some mornings to find cloudy skies with a polite rain coming down and I drive five minutes into the canyon and find a blue hole in the sky with sunny skies and dry walls waiting to be climbed.

Replacing Bolts In Potrero Chico

New Anchors Milk Cow Blues

Most of the bolts are in good shape but you’ll find a few here and there that need replacing. Also some developers mixed the metals which can accelerate corrosion under certain conditions.

Potrero Chico is always in need of volunteers. If you want to help with replacing bolts, cleaning up or trail maintenance get in touch with us. I’m sure we can find something for you to do Continue reading “Replacing Bolts In Potrero Chico”
