El Potrero Chico Snow Day

El Potrero Chico Snow Day

El Potrero Chico Weather
Super Nova In The Snow

El Potrero Chico weather can be very strange sometimes. I’ve woken some mornings to find cloudy skies with a polite rain coming down and I drive five minutes into the canyon and find a blue hole in the sky with sunny skies and dry walls waiting to be climbed.

To add to that strangeness we had a snow day in El Potrero Chico on December 8th. That’s right you  read right a snow day! We woke up to 6 to 7 inches of white powder all over the the landscape.  I know for a lot of you this is normal but here in El Potrero Chico it’s anything but. It hasn’t snowed here since 1997.

The locals and climbers alike came out to have fun in the snow. I found a lot of humor in watching people play (and drive) in the snow for the first time. Team El Buho came out to climb a few routes.

“You could hear tree limbs breaking from the weight of the snow. It really did blanket the entire area.”

In Nuevo León, highways to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas and Coahuila, were closed to traffic after heavy snowfall stranded an estimated 2000 motorists. Temperatures in the greater Monterrey area dropped to below 0 C. Some people were trapped in their cars for 12 hours before the roads reopened.

For those of you planning on coming here this winter don’t worry like I said before this is a rare event.
